Construction of a gazebo for a summer house with a barbecue with your own hands

In this article I will tell you how to properly arrange a place on your summer cottage or on the territory of your own home for a good rest, namely how to properly build a gazebo with a barbecue. The choice of material for your construction determines whether you can spend time with friends all year round, telling interesting stories and cooking barbecue and other delicious dishes, or whether you can use your gazebo only in the summer.

Particular attention should be paid to the type of fireplace that you plan to install in the gazebo. Will it be a regular grill or barbecue or a separate cooking area with numerous components, forming a full-fledged complex.

Features of wooden gazebos

Wood is a relatively inexpensive material, so many site owners choose it to create a gazebo. Moreover, such structures fit well into the landscape design of any site. Wood is easy to process, so if desired, you can create an original gazebo.

Structures are often created from rounded logs. To understand which design will be more suitable for a particular area, it is worth considering photos of designs for gazebos with barbecues.

When choosing the type of gazebo, it is worth remembering some features:

  1. Structures made of wood treated with protective compounds can last quite a long time. At the same time, damaged building elements can be easily replaced with new ones.
  2. If the soil on the site is dense, you can create a gazebo without a foundation. In this case, it is enough to lay a massive slab of concrete on the ground. Concrete can be covered with boards or paving slabs.

If you wish, you can find ready-made gazebo designs so as not to draw up a building diagram.

Step-by-step instructions for a summer kitchen with a stove

For construction to be effective, one cannot do without drawing up a drawing. The task of the project: to provide for all the nuances of interior and exterior decoration. A well-thought-out drawing is the key to successful construction.

A summer kitchen is more difficult to build than a gazebo. More nuances need to be taken into account. But in general, the stages of constructing a summer kitchen are similar to the construction of a gazebo.

Laying the foundation

Before constructing the foundation, the surface of the area must be leveled. Then we apply the markings. For an open kitchen, a foundation buried 10–15 cm is sufficient. To arrange the foundation, remove a layer of earth and fill it with sand. Compact and level. It is advisable to cover the base with tiles or stone.

If you are building a kitchen out of brick, its weight is much greater. A slab or strip foundation is required. Standard depth is 55–75 cm.

Take a break from the bustle of the city in your countryside

The working algorithm can be divided into the following stages:

  1. Removing the soil layer to the required depth.
  2. Laying sand.
  3. Construction of the foundation.
  4. Floor arrangement. We lay crushed stone on the sand. We make a concrete screed on top.

The floor in the kitchen should rise a few centimeters above the ground. This will prevent precipitation from getting inside.

Walls and roof

It is difficult to build a stone summer kitchen without basic construction skills. A simpler and more practical option is timber walls. It is enough to build a frame and fasten the joints with screws. The beams are connected to the base using metal corners. From the outside we cover the structure with boards, plasterboard, etc.

It is desirable that the roof be of a gable type; a thermal insulation layer will be useful for the winter. The final stage is covering the roof with protective material. A canopy would come in handy in a summer kitchen.

In a closed room there must be windows. Today, openings as tall as a man are common. They provide good light transmission. When installing windows, make sure they are tightly fixed in the opening. To speed up installation, use silicone gaskets.

Stove installation and finishing

The most economical option is wood stoves. They are often installed in summer kitchens. The structure is also made of refractory bricks. It is heat resistant and holds heat well.

The floor can be laid with tiles, boards or linoleum. The wood flooring looks great. To increase durability, it is treated with varnish and enamel. It is also easy and convenient to lay ceramic tiles.

For finishing ceilings, boards 15–25 mm thick or sheets of plasterboard are suitable. The first ones are treated with drying oil before installation. Drywall is painted after installation.

Brick gazebos

If there is a brick house on the site, brick gazebos are often created, as they are combined with the main structure.

It is worth remembering that a brick building will cost more than a wooden one. At the same time, construction will require more time. Also, for such a gazebo you need to build a massive foundation.

But the advantages of such buildings are undeniable:

  • brick gazebos are not afraid of fire and moisture;
  • the described structures can be used for several decades without requiring replacement of structural elements, as happens when using wooden gazebos.

It is worth noting that brick gazebos are often made in combination:

  1. Often a wooden structure is created, one wall of which is brick. This is necessary to create a furnace.
  2. Many people also build a gazebo, the seating area of which is made of wood, and part of the structure near the stove is made of brick.
  3. If the brick structure has large openings, they are decorated with forged elements or wooden gratings.

Having considered the designs of bathhouses and gazebos with barbecues, you can choose the most suitable design.

Types of outdoor cooking devices

Shish kebab can be called the most favorite dish of Russians on vacation. You can fry shish kebab with only skewers or a grill, having built a kind of barbecue out of clay, stones or bricks. But it’s much more comfortable and civilized to do this at the dacha, taking advantage of all the amenities. Devices such as a grill, barbecue or barbecue are very helpful for a country cook. They are used for frying meat, poultry, fish, vegetables and mushrooms over coals, and differ only in the complexity of their design and additional capabilities. Before building a gazebo for such a brazier, you need to understand which of these devices will be more convenient, useful, and cheaper for you.

Brazier

This is the simplest of all devices: a rectangular metal box on legs. Smoldering coals lie right at the bottom of the grill, and the heat from them is directed from bottom to top. On the side walls at the bottom there are holes for creating traction, and in the upper part there are recesses for placing skewers. The grill is often folding and does not have a lid. The easiest way to take it with you on a picnic or on a camping trip along with skewers or a grill. Skewers are included separately with the grill. It is better if they are steel, twisted, with sharp ends. Some people prefer the folding grille. You can use it to fry large pieces of meat or fish, meat products: sausages, sausages, cutlets.

On a simple folding grill you can cook food using skewers and a grill

B-B-Q

There is still a lot of controversy about the word “barbecue”. One of the best interpretations is its origin from the French “barbe et queue” - “from beard to tail.” Initially, it was not pieces that were fried on the grill, but whole lambs or piglets. In Russian, this device received the affectionate name “barbecue”.

A barbecue differs from a barbecue in that it has a more complex structure. The design of the barbecue provides two grates - for coal (it provides good traction) and for food (food is fried directly on it). Like the barbecue, the barbecue does not have a lid. This is a more complex and expensive device. Stores sell ready-made barbecues, which are a metal structure on high legs, often with a lid and additional folding shelves. In more expensive models, the distance between the grates can be changed, which allows you to regulate the intensity of the heat and makes cooking much easier. The heat in a barbecue, like in a barbecue, is directed from bottom to top.

The barbecue design has two grates - for coal and for frying food.

Sometimes the word “barbecue” is used to describe an entire large structure on a site, the so-called garden fireplace. As a rule, it is built of brick or stone, with a solid roof and a table for preparing food.

The so-called garden fireplace can include a barbecue, grill, boiler, barbecue

Often, everything is installed into a garden fireplace at once: a grill, a barbecue, a grill, a cauldron (cauldron) and a sink for washing meat and vegetables. Usually it is precisely such structures that are covered with gazebos.

The garden fireplace can be covered with a canopy or you can first build a gazebo and then arrange a suitable brazier in it

Grill

A grill differs from a barbecue in that it has a grill for coals and a lid, which provides heat from all sides, and not just from below. But if you fold it back or put it aside, the grill will work like a regular barbecue. It does not look at all as elegant as a garden fireplace, but looks like a barrel or a large flat cauldron. In the grill, you can regulate the air flow to the coals and the fried product, for which dampers are made in the lower and upper halves. Sometimes it is equipped with an umbrella to catch falling coals. Thanks to the lid, the cooking speed increases, and the finished dish turns out more stewed than fried - and therefore more healthy.

The grill differs from the barbecue and barbecue in the presence of a lid.

Metal structures

Forged gazebos are brought to the site already assembled or assembled from several parts. Such designs have a high cost and can be an original decoration of the site. It is worth noting that the described gazebos do not require preparatory and finishing work.

But it is important to treat the metal so that rust does not appear on it. One of the advantages of metal structures is that there is no need to create a foundation.

Often wrought iron gazebos are complemented by wrought iron benches. If desired, the gazebo can be painted in the color you like.

Fire safety

Combustible materials must be treated with fire retardant impregnation.
Fire resistance is ensured by:

  • correct choice of materials for floors, walls, roofing;
  • arrangement of hoods;
  • removing items made of flammable materials away from the grill while lighting a fire.

There should be no dry grass or fallen leaves in the cooking area. Combustible materials of walls and floors 2–3 are treated with impregnations containing fire retardants.

The chimney is made of sufficient size so that the column of fire falls completely within the range of the hood. The casing is made of metal.

Choosing a stove for a gazebo

It is worth noting that the foundation for the furnace is poured separately. It is important to make it above the level of water that can accumulate on the floor after rain. This is due to the fact that the masonry is done on a sand-clay mortar, which is resistant to moisture.

Many experienced builders recommend placing the barbecue in the middle of the building or on the northeast side. In front of the stove, it is necessary to secure a material that is not afraid of fire. This is necessary to protect against fire if sparks from the stove fall on the floor covering. It is also worth considering that the stove should not be located close to a wooden wall.

Stoves installed in gazebos can be divided into several types:

  1. Barbecue oven, which can be stationary or portable.
  2. Russian stove, which has an oven, grill and barbecue grill. Sometimes such ovens are equipped with a smokehouse.
  3. Kitchenette. When choosing this option, additional furniture is installed.

The size of the stove installed in the gazebo depends on the expected number of people.

What type of building should I choose?

Before you make a gazebo with a barbecue, you should determine the type of structure. This will allow the construction of a multifunctional building that meets the owner’s requirements. Regardless of the material of manufacture, gazebos are divided into three types:

  • Open
. They do not have load-bearing walls in their structure. Designed for use in warm seasons. They consist of several vertical supports on which the roof is located. Structures of this type protect against precipitation.
  • Semi-closed
. They are a structure with walls on one, two or several sides and a roof. Used mainly in the warm season. Protects from precipitation and gusts of wind. Some owners equip semi-closed buildings with sliding doors. This makes it possible to use the gazebo at any time of the year.
  • Closed
. They are made in the form of a building with walls and a roof. Can be used at any time of the year, regardless of ambient temperature. The walls are equipped with panoramic windows.

Using a grill or barbecue in a closed gazebo allows you not only to cook food, but also to heat the room during the cold season. It is possible to connect the structure to the electrical network.

Creating a foundation

The simplest option is to install a concrete slab. Such products can withstand the weight of any gazebo. It is worth noting that the slab can be laid on dry soil. But before that, you need to dig a hole of the required size and fill it with crushed stone. After such actions, it is necessary to lay a layer of waterproofing. Roofing felt is most often used.

But it is worth remembering that the described option is not suitable if the groundwater is located high or if the site is in a lowland. Due to exposure to moisture, the gazebo may warp over time. That is why it is important to take into account all the conditions that may affect the structure.

Preparatory stage

Before you start building the structure, decide on the territory. There are basically two options: near the house or in the far corner of the site. There are advantages in both cases

It is important to remember that the location of the gazebo affects its functionality. When deciding on the territory, take into account the features of connecting electricity, water, gas

It is advisable to choose a place away from utility rooms, toilets, drainage pits, and enclosures.

Choosing a grill

An important component in a gazebo is the stove. When choosing a ready-made grill, you should take into account its material and design features. Moreover, you need to decide at the planning stage.

There are a wide variety of barbecues on sale. It is advisable to choose a model that will fit well into the design of the room. For gazebos built from wood, a portable barbecue is an excellent option. It is light and compact. Built-in barbecues are popular. Their advantage is excellent equipment. These stoves are great for indoor spaces.

Pile and column foundation

If the gazebo is being created at the same time as the house, the piles should be driven in while creating the foundation for the main structure. If you don’t want to hire professional builders, you should install brick pillars or block supports. They are laid to a height of approximately 900 mm. The height above the ground is about 30 cm.

Important! To create pillars you need to use only solid red brick.

The pillars are installed at the corners of the structure, as well as along the walls. It is worth remembering that the distance between the pillars should not be more than 2 meters, since the reliability of the structure depends on this. Lightweight gazebos are often installed on wooden poles.

From the hearth to the barbecue - the progress of fire

Some 20-30 years ago, the most common device for preparing barbecue was a pair of bricks laid around a fire, or a simple structure made of branches stuck into the ground. However, today, even at outdoor events, many people prefer ready-made metal barbecues, which can be conveniently folded into a suitcase after use. It is not surprising that near a dacha or country house today you can see at least a metal barbecue on legs. The owners strive to build this useful object from stone or fire-resistant brick, equip a comfortable kitchen around it, and where there is a kitchen, there is a dining table, chairs, and a canopy. If you take on such a project, then do everything in the best possible way, so you should approach the choice of barbecue very responsibly.

First, let's figure out how the grill differs from the grill and barbecue - perhaps you decide to give preference to the latter.

Metal grill with legs

In fact, there are few fundamental differences in all devices - every barbecue can be called a barbecue, but not every barbecue is a barbecue. A brazier is any container for lighting a fire and conveniently placing a grill for meat or skewers. A grill differs from a barbecue in the presence of a lid, under which the food warms up better and becomes juicier. However, any barbecue can be retrofitted with such a lid if you have sheet metal and desire on hand, so today it is customary to consider grill and barbecue to be synonymous words that mean the same thing.

But barbecue is a tool for the highest culinary aerobatics. Firstly, every barbecue, in addition to a fire bowl and a lid, must have several grates for simultaneous roasting of meat, vegetables and other delicacies. Secondly, a barbecue differs from a barbecue in its wider possibilities for regulating draft - in conventional devices there are a large number of holes, by opening or closing which you can increase or decrease the combustion temperature of the coals. More advanced versions even have air blowers powered by electricity, built-in thermometers and many other bells and whistles that every cook will be delighted with.

BBQ with draft control

There are a huge number of options for mobile and stationary barbecues, grills and barbecues, there are even built-in options. The most important thing that you must remember when building a large grill or barbecue inside the gazebo is to equip a good hood, otherwise your guests will have to wait outside while cooking, away from the acrid smoke.

Tape base

This type of foundation is chosen most often, since it can be created with your own hands. To create it, you need to dig a trench around the perimeter of the future structure and create formwork. A sand cushion is created at the bottom of the trench. The depth of pouring the tape for gazebos is usually about 40 cm, since such structures are light in weight.

After creating the sand cushion, a reinforcement cage is placed in the formwork, which is then filled with concrete. It is worth noting that such a foundation can be prefabricated and consist of reinforced concrete blocks. In this case, the process of creating a gazebo is significantly accelerated, since there is no need to wait for the concrete to harden. From the moment the concrete is poured into the trench until the walls are created, you must wait about 7 days.

The simplest model

The standard oven model consists of three compartments. Essentially, you have to lay out of brick a figure in the shape of the letter “W” with four partitions.

Bricks must be laid in half-brick layers. With this type of masonry, each next row is shifted in a checkerboard pattern.

Laying out odd rows must begin with the installation of whole bricks, and even rows with halves. Protrusions are formed on the sixth and tenth rows.

At this height, the material is laid sideways, across the main rows. To maintain wall thickness in these areas, bricks are laid in two rows.

In the case where the design of the stove provides for the presence of a sink, then at the level of the sixth row it is necessary to leave a hole for the drain.

At the level of the seventh row, it is necessary to decide on which side the heat-resistant chamber will be located in the future, and on which side the working surface (countertop and sink). It is from this row that bricks continue to be laid only on the left or right.

This will be done with cement mortar, which will evenly fill all joints. It is best to round off seams that have not yet dried with a special joint. If you don't have one, a piece of any small-diameter garden hose will do.
