This concept refers to the area behind the back of the house. Apart from the owners, no one sees what is in this place, and therefore the owners of the site do not particularly “bother” with its improvement, and do not spend any effort or time on the appropriate design of the backyard.
And it’s in vain - after all, using various design tricks you can equip a wonderful place for a pleasant time with friends at a blazing barbecue.
The most fashionable options for arranging the “invisible” part of the site today are:
- design of vertical arches;
- decorative fencing;
- cascade placement of flower beds.
Taking into account nuances
It is possible to achieve the necessary beauty and charm if you carefully prepare for the upcoming work and take into account all the difficulties that arise. When planning the placement of a gazebo with barbecue, you need to calculate:
- will the smoke disturb the neighbors?
- is it possible to reliably hide a place for intimate conversations from prying eyes;
- provide a place for a utility room where the barbecue and firewood will be stored.
To place a playground, you should plan the location of such necessary elements as:
- closed sandboxes;
- swing;
- slide;
- various decorative figures of fairy-tale characters.
The undeniable advantage of locating a children's area in the backyard is that children are always supervised and away from roads.
Fire pit
This place creates comfort, friendliness and will delight guests with delicious food; the main goal of creating such a place is precisely this.
Nowadays, the range of barbecues and related accessories is very large, so you need to rely only on your taste when choosing these accessories.
Hedge
Many people prefer a comfortable holiday alone with a view of nature. It is not difficult to create such an atmosphere with the help of fast-growing shrubs and climbing trees. This method is especially suitable for those who do not want to make a conventional fence.
Arch
A metal frame entwined with climbing plants creates a beautiful entrance to the backyard from any other part of the property.
Under a beautiful natural canopy you can set up a table and hide from the scorching rays of the sun.
Rest corner
A place where you can relax serenely in the sun or, conversely, hide from it under a light roof, is considered an almost impossible dream for many of our compatriots. But you can bring it to life with just a few moves. For this you will need:
- lawn;
- a pair of armchairs or sun loungers;
- beach umbrella or canopy.
Instead of a lawn that will need to be maintained, you can install a dense floor made of tiles, wood or pebbles. A hanging chair or hammock can play the role of sun loungers.
Wall of plants
One of the unusual options for decorating a backyard is the use of plantings of coniferous trees, hiding secluded areas of the site from the indiscreet glances of passers-by.
Instead of trees, you can use decorative bushes (juniper, boxwood) planted along the fence.
body of water
Before you begin building a decorative pond, you should consult with specialists in preparing the soil and pouring concrete under the bowl of a pool, fountain or pond.
Any area of water will, without a doubt, make the backyard even more beautiful and add special charm and charm to the entire area.
Problems of six hundred
Any city dweller would like to have a vast suburban area, so that it would be possible not only to build a house and outbuildings, but also to plant a garden of fruit trees, a vegetable garden with the necessary vegetables for winter preparations, and, of course, not to forget about the beauty - flowers, water space, flower beds, playground.
What to do if the entire farm should be located on just six acres?
Advice! Approach the layout of the site in an extraordinary way.
Dry stream
If you don’t really want to deal with water, you can make a dry stream.
For this you will need:
- sand;
- geotextiles;
- stones.
To add additional comfort, such a creation can be decorated with a decorative bridge, herbs, and flowers.
Visual expansion
The owners of a small space definitely want to enlarge it. We are always happy to listen to advice on at least visual expansion of the site.
But what if we approach this problem from the other side and do everything the other way around? That is, reduce the territory of the courtyard and plant green thickets around the perimeter of the fence? Climbing plants and flowering bushes will “close” the fence and create the illusion of vast green walls.
Another trick is to design the steps. Select several levels and thereby increase the usable area.
The supporting walls should be made high (up to one meter) and decorated with facing stones. The upper part of the lower tier can be used for garden plants. Plant vertically growing plants. Garden plants that grow upward, such as peas and cucumbers, will allow you to set up a vegetable garden in a minimal area.
Place the second level under a miniature pond. In addition to the aesthetic component, it will serve as a reservoir, and you will always have water for irrigation at hand.
In the most spacious place of the stepped cascade, install a table and chairs. There will be a wonderful corner for family gatherings.
Parking area
Arrangement of the entrance is one of the first tasks that arises when buying a cottage. There are several parking requirements. It is better to park the car at the front door. This saves time and effort when unloading and loading. The parking lot must have a canopy to protect it from rain and snow. To prevent water accumulation, it is important to raise the parking area above the site level. Paving slabs, crushed stone, brick, concrete or natural stone are suitable as coverings.
Vertical vegetable garden
It is not difficult to make such a structure. You can use many materials that usually end up in trash cans as unnecessary.
Important! Before you begin “construction,” you should determine what plants you are going to plant, and this depends on which side your backyard is located on – sunny or shady.
The following grow well in vertical beds:
- peas;
- radish;
- parsley;
- green onions;
- cilantro;
- beans;
- green onions, etc.
A well-designed vertical structure will not require much time and effort. Children are especially happy with such beds, and they can be entrusted with caring for them.
Tiled paths, steps
Garden paths are an essential part of every country house. In addition to the main one - safe movement, they also perform secondary, but important functions - dividing the area into zones, decorating the territory. When laying paths, they use concrete slabs, flat stones, cobblestones, or simply cover them with a large amount of pebbles, while fencing them off with a low curb.
By creating combinations of the above materials, it is possible to obtain not only the desired practicality, but also a wonderful decoration for any backyard.
Sealed forms and landscape design are things that are closely related. Some people find harmony in the smoothness of contours, lines, rounded bushes or flower beds, while others prefer strictness - straight garden paths, square-shaped bushes, trimmed as if “to fit a ruler.”
As they say: “There is no comrade according to taste and color,” because it depends only on you what the decor of this area will be and only you know what will bring harmony to your soul.
Planting vegetation in flower pots or flower beds should be planned so that the flowering of some varieties is followed by the flowering of others. In this situation, the backyard will be able to delight you and your loved ones with a bright floral scheme for a long time.

- Microgreens at home
If your terrain is represented by humps and hills, do not rush to level them and harm the environment, just create artificial embankments and level their slopes. Also, so that there is not such a noticeable difference between the hills and the lowlands, add neat steps that will focus all the attention on yourself.
pros
The positive aspects of a vertical vegetable garden include:
- decorativeness, which you can clearly see when looking at photographs of backyards planned according to this principle;
- saving space and the ability to place the structure in any corner of a small area;
- ease of care;
- inaccessibility of the crop to most pests;
- practicality, the soil in small containers warms up much faster in the spring, therefore, ripening occurs earlier, which allows you to get several harvests in one season.
Leveling out negative aspects
The vertical design also has a number of disadvantages:
- the soil in containers dries out quickly and the beds need frequent watering;
- a small amount of soil in containers does not allow sowing all the usual garden plants, and those already planted require regular feeding;
- If the site is located in a climatic zone where severe winters are observed, it is not recommended to plant perennial crops - in winter the soil will freeze and the plants will die.
It is impossible to completely get rid of all negative consequences, but some of them can be minimized:
- Grow only greens and annual crops with a compact bark system;
- add hydrogel to the soil, it is able to accumulate moisture and gradually “give it” to the plant roots;
- use a drip irrigation system.
You can buy a “dropper” in a store, or you can search on the World Wide Web for diagrams of how to create them yourself.
Playing with light
Properly installed lanterns, spotlights, and lamps can highlight the advantages of landscape design and hide weaknesses. In addition to their decorative function, they must ensure safe movement around the site in the evening. Pendant lamps are chosen for terraces, pergolas and arches. Along the paths and next to the steps, decorative lampposts or ground lamps are installed, built into the road surface.
