Do-it-yourself tandoor made of brick: ready-made drawings, dimensions, step-by-step instructions + 100 photo ideas

Topics on the portal that tell you how to build an outdoor brick oven or barbecue with your own hands traditionally arouse increased interest. The reason is the popularity among suburban residents of stove complexes located, for example, in a gazebo. A thoughtful homemade design is offered by a user of the StooDent portal.

StooDent

After building the gazebo, I thought about building a brick oven for cooking. I thought for a long time about how to make it. I studied information on FORUMHOUSE, on the Internet and finally decided on a project. This is a 3-in-1 universal stove complex with a hob for a cauldron, a barbecue for cooking kebabs and a mini-Russian oven for various delicacies.

The StooDent stove took second place in the competition held at FORUMHOUSE, “Ideas for arranging a barbecue area.”

And these are the pies that are made in this oven.

And kebab.

Now we’ll tell you how to make such a brick stove complex with your own hands.

What dishes can you prepare?

In the tandoor you can cook the following dishes:

  1. Flatbread. This will not be so easy to do, since you need to be able to mount them correctly on the walls.
  2. Kebabs or barbecue. The meat must be cooked on skewers.
  3. Pilaf. Prepared in a cauldron.

Types of tandoors

The first type of tandoor was earthen. It formed a pit in which firewood smoldered and gradually turned into coals. Due to the fact that all this happened in the ground, the wind could not extinguish the fire. Then the walls of the tandoor began to be made of clay, which is now often replaced by ceramics. Now there are vertical and horizontal tandoors, but it is the first type that is most widespread. The simplest tandoor is made from clay pots or barrels.

Simplified method

A simplified method of laying a stove does not involve coating with clay

An easy way to build a roasting pan yourself is to build a 75 cm high tandoor out of refractory bricks. It is impossible to bake bread in such an oven because clay is not used, but it is easy to fry shish kebab.

The tandoor is built on a base of 3 rows of sand-lime bricks laid according to the pattern along, across and again along the dug pit. Then they lay fire bricks on edge, forming a circle.

The first row and the next 2 are secured with steel wire. The finished structure is coated with a fire-resistant mixture for laying stoves and fireplaces, and after drying it is plastered.

Procedure for the simplified construction method

Next, the outer walls are coated twice with clay with a layer of 2 cm, wrapped with a reinforcing lattice, and covered with cement mortar (a mixture of 3 parts sand and 1 part cement).

The outer walls of the furnace are leveled with cement mortar

If desired, a metal ring 5 cm high is installed at the outlet hole to install a protective cover. To hang skewers, a metal crossbar is often additionally welded to the sides.

The outer walls of the tandoor are decorated with stone or painted with fire-resistant paint for decorative purposes.

Materials for brick tandoor

Materials needed to build a tandoor with your own hands:

  • fireclay brick -75 pcs.;
  • clay + straw, sand, gravel or sifting, cement;
  • 2 pipes No. 10, length 1.5 m;
  • Thin section of reinforcement 5m;
  • lining (lime) for making a lid;
  • 2 door handles with wooden lining;
  • reinforcing bar No. 8 or 10.

Second row

The second row is laid out using the same technology. To increase the strength of the structure, the bricks of the second row should be placed in relation to the bricks with ligation and an offset of approximately half the width of the vertically standing brick. A blower is installed in the second row.

Stages of brick type construction

It’s easy to make a brick tandoor with your own hands if you strictly follow all the parameters and instructions. Below are drawings and diagrams for creating a tandoor.

Creating a foundation

  • a pit is made, the depth of which is approximately 60cm;
  • geomaterial should be laid at the bottom of the pit;
  • a thin layer of crushed stone is laid;
  • cover with sand in a thin layer;
  • lay waterproofing 10cm thick;
  • lay out reinforced timber;
  • concreting 8-12cm thick;
  • The surface must be covered with film and left to dry.

Creating a tandoor base

You need to make a cross from reinforcement beams. It is useful for creating a deep groove in the top of the tandoor, as well as for hanging skewers. Optimal size: 10-15 cm larger than the circumference of the tandoor.

You need to bend a circle with a diameter of 35 cm from the reinforcing beam; it is important that this circle fits freely into the hole of the tandoor. Weld 4 bracket handles to it, which will strictly fit into the grooves of the upper part of the stove. On this device it is convenient to arrange the skewers in a circle. You can pull it out, turn it back and put it in a circle up, placing the handles in the grooves. Then it will be convenient to place a cauldron for pilaf or other dishes.

Creating a cover

From a natural wood paneling we cut out a lid to the size of the surface of the tandoor, aligning it with its edges. Attach a small circle to the inner surface, inserting it tightly into the hole of the tandoor. Attach door handles with a wooden lining to the lid. Or cut it out of a thick iron circle and weld a large handle to it.

Creating a canopy

You can make a 3 × 3 meter canopy over the tandoor, as it needs shelter from rain and snow. The result is a gazebo that can be well equipped.

When constructing a tandoor, it is better to watch a video with detailed instructions.

Peculiarities

A brick barbecue is a stationary outdoor fireplace. And when designing, it is necessary to take into account the features of its installation and placement.

Types of barbecue and placement features

There are two types of outdoor brick barbecues: a single oven and a complex of oven devices.

In the first case, it can be a closed or open hearth with provisions for installing a spit, skewers or grate over smoldering coals.

If it is an open hearth, without a domed vault and a chimney, then it can only be located in the open air, subject to appropriate fire safety measures.

But if you take a strict approach, it is not easy to comply with these measures in the limited space of the local area.

A closed stove with a chimney can be placed either outdoors or in a gazebo (or under a canopy).

And quite often, owners are not content with just one barbecue function - baking food in the heat of burnt wood or charcoal. Here, nearby, they can put a stove with a hob, a tandoor, sections for storing firewood, a work table for cutting meat and preparing food. And this is a whole complex for cooking on the street.

But in any case, when choosing a location, they are guided by the standards for the placement of auxiliary (service) structures on the site - minimum distances from the house, the border with the neighboring site, and separate trees.

When a barbecue area is equipped with all the “conveniences” (water, drainage, electricity), then the proximity of utility networks and the possibility of connecting to them must be taken into account. If the connection to the water supply is not provided for according to the plan, then the stove should be located closer to the summer kitchen or not far from the house from the side of the regular kitchen.

Installation Features

Any brick structure, regardless of its size, requires a good foundation. And a stove is best suited for these purposes.

Moreover, when arranging a shallow strip foundation, it is necessary to take into account the characteristics of the soil. And they are such that the tape may not withstand the forces of frost heaving, and cracks will appear in the brickwork. The slab is a universal type of base, and it works well even on weak and floodable soils.

Usually the main counterargument against a slab is the high consumption of concrete. But for such a relatively small structure as a barbecue oven, not so much of it will be needed.

Useful tips

  1. Never pour lighter fluid into the tandoor, keep it clean.
  2. The ash can be used as fertilizer.
  3. When preparing dishes in a tandoor, it is not necessary to always be nearby.
  4. You can fry and bake various dishes in the tandoor.

How to make a tandoor from ordinary pots

Tandoor can be made from clay pots. This is the simplest tandoor that you can make with your own hands. Using this technique, the device is made very quickly. How to make a tandoor with your own hands using this method:

  1. Drill holes in the bottom of pot #1.
  2. Saw the bottom of pot #2 and save as a lid.
  3. Choose a clean place in the yard where to place the tandoor. It will be heavy to move once assembled, so place it where it will be used.)
  4. Place pot #1 on a cement slab so that it is higher than the ground.
  5. Line the bottom of the pot with special stones.
  6. Place pot No. 3 on the stones.
  7. Fill the void around the pots with stones.
  8. Place pot No. 2 with the rim down on No. 3 (they should fit fairly securely to each other).
  9. Place the cut bottom of the pot on top as a lid.

Uzbek model: economical and practical construction

The version of the stove invented by the Uzbeks is suitable for particularly zealous owners. A single addition of fuel will allow the cooking process to take place within 3 hours. Creating a design takes time, but does not require significant expenses. Thanks to this technology, it will be possible to create a stationary or mobile tandoor.

The Uzbek stove model can vary significantly depending on the wealth of the owner and the region in which it is used. The main material for making the structure is clay. There are special fittings inside (inserts made of kaolin or refractory bricks).

A pitcher-shaped clay tandoor is the most economical choice. It allows you to be as careful as possible with fuel consumption.

To create the base, they use not only a special type of clay (“live”, with a high content of kaolin), but also animal wool (camel or sheep). Both materials are mixed, the resulting composition is aged for about a week. Time allows the solution to “mature”. At the same time, daily intervention in this process is inevitable: the composition needs to be “stirred”.

The finished material, aged for a week, is used to sculpt the base of the furnace. There are plenty of technologies for this. We will consider the most common and affordable way to make a tandoor oven yourself below.

How to use a tandoor from pots

  1. Place coal on the bottom of the tandoor.
  2. If desired, lightly brush vegetables and meat with olive oil and place pieces on extra-long wooden barbecue skewers;
  3. When the coals are hot, place the skewers with meat and vegetables.
  4. The vegetable and meat pieces should cook in less than 5 minutes.

Important note: Be careful when handling skewers near heat and wear long, soft oven mitts for protection.

Using approximately the same principle, you can make a tandoor with your own hands from a barrel.
