Refilling the fishing line

According to this parameter, trimmer heads can be divided into two categories:

1. Fast charging. On such models, when winding the cord, it is not necessary to disassemble the reel. One edge of the next threaded fishing line is inserted into a reel and wound several times. After selecting the required length, the material is cut.
2. Heads of collapsible type. To refill them, you need to remove the reel from the unit, then remove the used fishing line and wind a new analogue.

The working head contains special indicators in the form of arrows. They are responsible for the direction of movement of the working part during rotation. If it is necessary to wind the fishing line in the direction of rotation of the shaft, it is turned to a certain position. Excessive amounts of cord can result in equipment failure.

If it is impossible to wind the cord after an impact on a semi-automatic head, winding should be done again. Most likely, the user did not pull the ends of the line out of the sockets.

Engine Features

The main element responsible for the operation is the engine. They come in 2-stroke and 4-stroke versions. The former are fueled with a mixture of gasoline and oil, because they do not have a lubrication system, while the latter, more modern ones, are lubricated with oil poured into the crankcase, and are powered by clean fuel.

You can do planned maintenance work yourself, but if a part fails, it’s better to visit a workshop.

What you need to know about the design of an electric trimmer before starting its repair: 2 types of designs

Trimmers for cutting grass powered by electricity are manufactured with a power from 300 watts to 2 kW in two modifications. They differ in engine location:

1. below near the mowing head:
2. on top of the composite rod.

Such products are created for different tasks and differ in weight, power, and performance characteristics. The first types of models are lightweight and are used for processing the complex terrain of garden paths under bushes, near flower beds.

Products with an overhead engine allow you to process large areas and are characterized by high productivity.

Both types of mowers can operate from a 220 volt household network. However, luxury products are created with power from a built-in portable battery. Most often they are used on lightweight models, as shown in the photo above.

I show an example of a product with a top engine and its layout in the photo of my ECO GT-800L below. The strap allows you to hang the mower on your shoulder, and the handle provides convenient control of the cutting head when mowing.

The working body is a mowing head with a fishing line. On powerful models, it can be supplemented with a cutting knife made of metal or plastic. The high-speed torque for it is created by an electric motor, and it is transmitted by a kinematic circuit located inside the composite rod.

I show the internals in more detail with a photograph of the engine with the top housing cover removed on my trimmer. It is not equipped with a gearbox. By the way, this simple execution completely suits me.

The engine is turned on by a small limit switch with a convenient plastic cover located in the lower handle.

Features of the electrical circuit design: briefly

The base part is a typical commutator motor, in which the rotor in the bearings is driven by the rotating electromagnetic field of the stator windings.

The electric current that does the main work flows through a closed circuit of all windings through a brush-commutator mechanism.

The vast majority of motors use a thermal relay as protection against overheating of the winding insulation. When repairing, we consider it as a regular power contact in a closed state.

When the wire varnish becomes critically heated, it will simply open and interrupt the flow of electric current.

All elements of the electrical circuit are connected by wires and terminals to each other in a serial section. A short cable with a plug is brought out for connection to an extension cord.

How torque is transmitted from the engine to the mowing head: 3 components of the kinematic diagram

Participating in the work:

1. electric motor;
2. kinematics of a composite rod;
3. mowing head with fishing line or grass blade.

Please note that only the most powerful models can have an additional gearbox.

It is used to lower the speed and, accordingly, increase the power on the output shaft.

On some designs it is located immediately after the engine, built into its design.

For other models, it may be located at the bottom of the collection bar: immediately under the mowing head and protective cover.

Any of these gearboxes consists of two gears that transmit rotation. In the top photo they have a cylindrical shape with an oblique tooth, and in the bottom photo they have a conical shape, because they change rotation at an oblique angle.

The transmission of torque from the engine is carried out by a connecting unit consisting of a cylindrical bushing with a rectangular hole. The tip of a spring shaft of a corresponding shape, located inside an aluminum tube, is inserted into it.

The trimmer rod consists of two halves connected in series. Each part is made up of three parts inserted into each other:

1. external thin-walled protective tube made of aluminum alloy;
2. plastic insert;
3. spring shaft.

The joint of the rod is made in the middle of its length using an adapter with a screw connection, which allows the entire structure to be folded for convenient transportation.

At the bottom there is a mowing head with a protective cover. To trim excess fishing line, a knife is permanently installed on it, reducing its length to the optimal value.

First spring launch

In the spring, even before the start of the lawn mowing season, we recommend that you fire up the lawn mower for the first time to make sure that it is working properly or whether planned maintenance measures are necessary.

But before this, you should lubricate the spare parts that rotate, check whether the blades (or lines - depending on the model) need to be replaced.

It is worth checking to see if there is any fuel in the system, and if you drained it for the winter, bleed the fuel system using the engine suction valve (if there is one, of course).

What to do if the engine does not start

In such a situation, you will have to find out the cause of the malfunction. It's worth checking the fuel and air filters. The latter can be washed in gasoline or water with detergent. It is then squeezed out and dried.

Before returning it to its place, it is advisable to wet it a little (2 drops) with oil for a two-stroke engine. If the fuel filter breaks down, it will have to be replaced and the device must not be turned on without it.

A broken starter in the lawn mower may also be the cause. Some users pull the starter cable too hard, which can cause it to break. This in turn will require replacing the starter.

Troubleshooting electric trimmers

As mentioned above, the electric group of trimmers has its own typical set of faults, along with problems common to all manual mowers. How to eliminate them is below.

Assembly and disassembly

For most mechanisms, dismantling is the reverse process of installation. Electric mowers are no exception. Therefore, assembly instructions will be given below, and disassembly, accordingly, will be performed in the reverse order.

1. First you need to connect the protective cover using the multi-faceted wrench included in the kit.
2. To attach the head to the fishing line, align the holes in the gearbox cup and the hub and secure them with a locking rod. Then you need to unscrew the nut clockwise and remove the shaft cup, leaving the hub. Then you need to twist the head with the fishing line all the way counterclockwise. The knife is also attached to the hub, but a cup is also put on top and a nut is attached.
3. To assemble the trimmer rod, you need to connect its two parts. After making sure that the latch is in the hole, you should tighten the fastening knob.
4. Use the large bolts from the kit to attach the rod to the engine.
5. The handles need to be screwed at an equal distance from each other in the attachment point on the rod.

Start button

This part of the electric trimmer fails quite often. To check its performance, use an ohmmeter or other circuit testing device. If there is no resistance, the part must be replaced. Often the problem is with the plug, socket or wiring.

On a note! Sometimes the switch does not work due to a thermal relay, designed to protect the motor from overheating, and the problem is found in the button.

Electric motor

In the “heart” of the electric trimmer, it is necessary to check the armature, stator, bearings, and temperature sensors for malfunctions. You also need to ring the windings and pay attention to the condition of the brushes and contacts. Repairing burnt windings is more expensive. It's better to change it. Worn brushes also need to be replaced . You can repair the contacts yourself using a soldering iron. Problems in the engine are often indicated by a burning smell, sparking and vibration.

Mechanical breakdowns

Mechanical failures of this kind are typical for electric scythes.

1. If the engine is running but the cutting tool does not rotate, the flexible shaft has broken. To replace it, you need to unscrew the rod and remove the damaged part. If necessary, you will have to detach the lower part of the trimmer.
2. Often the rod itself breaks. During operation, it can be temporarily fixed using improvised objects. But later you will have to purchase a new stand.
3. Often during repairs you have to deal with cutting tools, especially a fishing line spool. To avoid unnecessary problems, you need to learn how to thread the string correctly.
4. Quite often it is necessary to replace the main shaft bearing for a cutting tool, as it breaks.

On a note! Mechanical failures can occur in the main trimmer segment where the main components are located. They may be chipped or cracked. Replacing or repairing such parts will indicate the severity of the damage.

What will help in a situation where the lawn mower starts but stalls?

The reason may be a clogged valve through which air enters the engine. If so, you should clean it and put it back in place.

The next probable reason is problems with the carburetor, namely its incorrect adjustment. Symptoms of this problem are that the engine runs unevenly or vibrates. This could be due to a change in the fuel composition, if the idle speed is not adjusted, or due to vibration, the bolts that adjust this part have become loose.

To adjust the carburetor, you should follow the manufacturer's recommendations. Before manipulation, clean the fuel and air filters.

As a result, the engine should run smoothly, regardless of position. A hot motor should have low speeds when there is no load. A cold engine should idle smoothly.

With this trimmer, there is no need to take out a spool every time; it is very important to change the line in the existing spool to a new skein.
