Sliding gates: diagrams, drawings, beautiful ideas and tips for choosing the best models (70 photos)

Hanging

This type of construction consists of a door leaf with roller carriages attached to it on top. A metal supporting beam is installed above the opening, to which a rail is attached, and it is on it that the canvas is suspended by the rollers. The lower part of the canvas remains without supports.

The advantages of hanging gates include:

  • Burglary resistance.
  • Rain and snow will not interfere with the operation of such gates, because they do not have supports at the bottom.
  • The system is robust and reliable. Service life reaches 50 years.
  • Low windage. That is, the gates are not afraid of sharp gusts of wind.

There are also disadvantages:

  • Vehicles that are too tall will not be able to enter the gate. The upper beam on which the canvas is suspended will interfere.
  • High metal consumption. That is, a significant amount of metal is spent on the manufacture of such gates, which is why the product is not cheap.

Foundation structure

The base is necessary for mounting the channel, to which the carriages with rollers will then be welded. They are the ones who ensure the movement of the sash.

Inside the yard, on the side of the part of the fence where the canvas will go, you should dig a hole for the foundation. The length of the base is equal to ½ of the opening, and the depth of the opening is 1 m. The channel is made 10-20 cm high. It should be equal to half the length of the canvas. Afterwards, a reinforcement cage is welded to the channel from below. To do this, you should choose rods with a diameter of 10-14 mm. The frame is then installed in the trench and filled with concrete.

The solution must be allowed to sit for at least a week. During this time, the concrete will gain sufficient strength.

Rail

In this system, the rollers, on the contrary, are welded to the bottom of the door leaf. The gate moves thanks to rollers along a rail installed at the zero level (the roller is “recessed” into the passage). The rail does not obstruct the passage of cars at all.

Pros:

  • Impact resistance.
  • Possibility of installation in wide (for example, 6 meters) openings.
  • Thanks to the support in the form of rollers, the canvas does not sag.
  • The canvas is compact. The space occupied by it is equal to the opening in width.

Of the minuses:

  • The operation of the rail may be blocked because the rail may become clogged with debris, sand, sediment or any small objects. You must be prepared for the fact that in winter, during periods of frequent temperature changes, the snow may melt and water will form in the rail, which will subsequently freeze and block operation.
  • The rail requires regular cleaning.

Common Mistakes

Making cantilever sliding gates with your own hands is not difficult. But if you lose sight of some points, you can end up with a design that will not work correctly after some time.

Common mistakes:

  1. The measurements were taken incorrectly, which affected the dimensions of the sliding gate.
  2. The foundation for the roller carriages was poured incorrectly. Particular attention should be paid to the depth of placement. The shallow structure will begin to deform and shift during the process of soil heaving. This is a guarantee that the gate will not be able to move on the rollers.
  3. If the counterweight was made short. Balance is an important indicator of the operation of sliding gates. If the weight of the canvas is not balanced, then the entire structure will “nod off.” This situation may affect the rollers, which will be subject to high bending loads.
  4. The door leaf must be rigid. This is the only way to resist the deformations that the structure is subjected to under the influence of wind and loads. Therefore, stiffeners are an important element. Without them, gates cannot be made.
  5. You cannot install rollers without an adjustment pad.
  6. The cross-section of the support rail must correspond to the length of the gate and its weight. An incorrectly selected ratio will lead to deformation of the rail and rapid wear of the roller carriages.

The simplicity of the design of sliding gates conceals many nuances on which the quality of the product depends. By neglecting any of them, you can lose the money invested in the construction. After all, improper operation and operation leads to unpleasant moments that lead to breakdowns in the future.

Console

Cantilever-type sliding gates consist of a frame that is installed on a foundation, a cantilever (bearing) beam and a gate leaf. Thanks to the rollers attached to it, a beam is rolled onto the frame, and the door leaf is hung on the beam. Catchers (a device that prevents the gate from swinging) are usually not required even with a 6-meter opening; they can only be installed in very windy places. You can install sliding cantilever gates before the fence is built.

Gate advantages:

  • The main advantage is the operating principle of cantilever gates. The work is not hampered by the rail located below, which can become clogged with debris, as is the case with sliding gates, and the beam, which is located above the opening and can interfere with passage, as is the case with hanging gates.
  • The rollers are completely covered by the beam. This means that snow, rain, as well as dirt and debris will not fall on the important element.
  • Low windage.
  • Easily equipped with an electric drive.
  • The gate fits tightly to the fence.

Cons of the gate:

  • The most difficult installation compared to other systems.
  • The need for a free section of the fence (1.5 times longer than the width of the opening), since space is needed for the cantilever beam.

Advantages and disadvantages

The advantages of sliding gates include:

  • soft, smooth and almost silent movement of the sash;
  • durability, high maintainability;
  • ease of control, the ability to use different methods of issuing commands to move and stop the sash;
  • simplicity of design;
  • resistance to all weather conditions;
  • there is no need to clear snow in winter to move the sash.

Flaws:

  • the need to strengthen the pillars delimiting the gate opening (usually they are concreted);
  • the need to make room for the movement of the sash, sometimes it is necessary to level the platform and add additional cushioning from ASG;
  • Periodic cleaning of the rollers and guides from dirt, small debris and other obstacles is required.

The disadvantages of sliding gates are considered relatively minor and do not deserve serious attention. All types of gates have to be maintained, and strengthening the support system and posts is a design requirement. The advantages, and in particular the ability to automate the movement of the sash, are considered much more significant qualities of such structures.

Number of sashes

What types of sliding gates are there based on the number of leaves? Accordingly, those where there is one flap and where there are two flaps.

  • Single leaf.

    The canvas covers the entire opening.

  • Bivalve.

    This system is much more complex. The leaves can be identical (and converge in the center) or different in width (and converge to the right or left of the central axis). Each sash involves the creation of a separate structure. Accordingly, the price of such a system will be higher.

Material

Thanks to modern materials, sliding gates can be of absolutely any style: from rustic to high-tech. It is also possible to make custom gates, fences and wickets in the same style.

  • Sandwich panel.

    Gates filled with sandwich panels (steel slats with polyurethane foam inside) have an incredible number of design options. In addition to an extensive palette of colors, there are various options for patterns applied to the slats.

    The surface of the panels can be corrugated (of different frequencies), paneled, or with microwaves as a pattern. Interestingly, sandwich panels can imitate wood and do this very successfully.

  • Roller rolling profile.

    This aluminum material, filled with foam as insulation, is also used for sliding gates and has no fewer color options than the previous version.

    It is especially worth emphasizing the anti-corrosion properties of the material.

  • Aluminum extruded profile.

    It is made from aluminum tape, which is 1.5 mm thick. The lamella, given its thickness, is quite durable and does not need to be filled with foam. The profile does not have a very rich palette, but there is plenty to choose from.

    It is noteworthy that, at your request, three types of gates can be made from this material: solid.

  • sparse. The area will be visible through the gaps. The degree of rarefaction is set at the request of the customer. By the way, profiles can be installed not only vertically, but also horizontally.
  • combined. For example, only the top part of the gate will be sparse. The profile has different widths, which opens up great opportunities for individual exterior design.
  • Forging.

    Such gates will add presentability to the corresponding exterior. Absolutely any ornament can be brought to life. Such systems are suitable for large private areas where there are no nosy neighbors nearby or people living nearby have gates of the same type. The price for such a product is traditionally high.

  • Profiled sheet.

    Refers to economical materials. At the same time, it can also look aesthetically pleasing. Strength and durability add advantages to the low cost.

  • Tree.

    Also refers to economical materials. Plus, such gates will require constant maintenance: periodically the wooden panel will have to be treated with protective compounds. Therefore, it is worth thinking in advance about the feasibility of such a canvas.

  • How does the installation work?

    Installation of sliding structures is carried out according to the following scheme:

    1. Taking measurements. An experienced craftsman inspects the existing site, determines the installation location, and coordinates all issues with the owner. After this, an agreement is signed.
    2. Our company manufactures the design in accordance with the technical specifications. For this purpose, only high-quality materials and components are used.
    3. In parallel with this, a mortgage is made on the site, which plays the role of a foundation. It is about 40 cm wide and up to 1.7 meters deep (it needs to be made to the depth of soil freezing). A channel is laid along the top. In general, the type of foundation may differ depending on the chosen design.
    4. The frame is assembled and strengthened. Then rollers or a guide beam are attached to it.
    5. The frame is installed and adjusted. It is then sheathed with the selected sheet material.

    Next, auxiliary equipment and fittings are installed: locks, bolts, handles, etc. Automation is installed and configured, if provided. To prevent the sheet material from rattling, a special soft gasket is placed under it. If necessary, the frame is painted, finishing work is carried out, after which the object is handed over to the customer.

    The installation process usually takes one day, but keep in mind that the foundation needs time to harden and gain the necessary strength. In general, this gate option is considered the best of all possible: they are comfortable, practical and fit well into any exterior.

    Sliding gate sizes

    Before installing the gate, you should pay attention to its future dimensions. Sliding gates are produced both standard and to order. If the dimensions are standard, then they are 4 m by 2 m and 3 m by 2 m, where the first value is the width and the second is the height. Where the door leaf width exceeds 4 m, it will be necessary to order additional construction in order to balance the counterweight, and this will cost significantly more.

    The width and height of the system will depend on the dimensions and purpose of the vehicles. A passenger car will freely pass through a three-meter opening, but freight transport will need an opening width of 4 meters. When installing hanging gates, also take into account the height of the vehicle so that the car can freely enter under the beam.

    What else needs to be considered

    At this point, the gate installation process can be considered complete. If it was initially planned that opening and closing would be performed automatically for sliding gates, then a drive would also be required. Its installation is carried out according to the diagram supplied with the kit. However, “traditional craftsmen” sometimes make such a drive themselves, using electric motors of sufficient power. Of course, in order for it to perform its functions, a gear strip must be welded to the gate leaf.

    Anyone who is interested in how to install sliding gates on their own needs to think everything over carefully, weigh the pros and cons, and objectively assess their capabilities and strengths. You also need to keep in mind that it will not be possible to make such gates from improvised means, so you will have to allocate a certain amount of money for the purchase of materials and accessories.

    We described in detail how to make sliding gates yourself, so as not to overpay for their installation and installation to strangers. Of course, this will require special skills and dexterity from you, but if you are not used to stopping in the face of difficulties, the approval and pride of all household members awaits you.
