Terry tulips: a selection of the most spectacular varieties

Tulips are perhaps the main decoration of a spring flower bed. Early and late, lily-flowered and parrot - all are good in their own way. But tulips with lush flowers - double ones - look especially impressive. By skillfully selecting varieties with different flowering periods, you will admire the tulip extravaganza for several weeks!

Today we have a new meeting with terry tulips. We have previously admired the extraordinary beauty of the 10 best double early tulips, but that was six years ago! During this time, many interesting varieties with lush flowers appeared at seasonal exhibitions in the Nikitsky Botanical Garden (in the Garden).

There were especially many double tulips at last year's parade. Among them, the debutant varieties from both classes (Terry early and Terry late) stood out with their unusual beauty. The best twenty varieties have already been presented to you in the article Tulips with a twist: double, parrot and other rarities. Before moving directly to the review of varieties, let's refresh our memory of the main similarities and differences between tulips of both classes.

  • Flowering duration is on average 3 weeks;
  • they are good in a wide variety of compositions of spring flower beds, in groups, in borders;
  • suitable for forcing and cutting.

Tulip variety "White Berliner", medium-colored, multi-colored, or family

Every gardener dreams of this legendary variety, even if it was bred only in 1984. It is not only captivatingly beautiful, but also multi-colored. The ability to produce not one, but more than three flowers on one peduncle turns each plant into a small bouquet. This tulip looks so elegant that it is impossible to take your eyes off it.

The White Berliner tulip (Weisse Berliner), with a German name and Dutch selection, is one of the most interesting hybrids. Medium-sized, with a strong peduncle up to 50 cm in height, it surprises with the structure of its stems. The main, powerful shoot at the top is divided into smaller secondary ones, on which additional flowers bloom.

Elegant, almost vertical, bluish castings hugging the stem emphasize the beauty of the flowers tightly seated in the brush. Small and goblet-shaped, classically simple, it is thanks to the large number of flowers of the plant that they seem very original.

The “White Berliner” variety is a medium-blooming and persistent variety whose flowers can be admired for several weeks.

The white color of these tulips does not appear immediately, but it looks dazzling. Creamy, warm-colored buds, on which green “feathers” are clearly visible on the outside, gradually become almost snow-white, with an inconspicuous yellow spot in the throat. The translucency of the petals emphasizes the beauty of the plant’s color, and the multi-flowered nature only enhances the effect of silky radiance.

With the help of elegant “bouquets” of this variety they decorate the foreground of flower beds and mixborders. It is indispensable for forcing or cutting, but also looks unforgettable when planted in the soil. Plants appear massive, so it is better to place them near textured and lacy partners.

Difference between late and early double tulips

There are only two of them, however, when arranging spring flower beds they will play an important role:

  • the height of the peduncle in early ones is up to 20-30 cm, and in late ones - 40-60 cm;

  • flowering time. Terry late varieties bloom 8-12 days later than their early “relatives”, which open their buds from the first days of April.

Life cycle

Tulips are the brightest representatives of ephemeral plants. These include species with a fairly short growing season, during which the plant organism must not only bloom, but also accumulate the necessary nutrients for wintering and produce a full-fledged fruit. As a result, the development of seeds to a full-fledged adult flower occurs over several years, and in some cases this requires up to 5 years.

At this time, two cotyledons are formed from a small seed, underground and aboveground. The root system and stolon grow from the first, the stem and leaves grow from the second. During the first year, a small bulb forms at the root system, which accumulates all the necessary substances around mid-summer.

Did you know? During World War II, tulips saved the lives of many Dutch people. The plant's bulbs became the main food for the starving population blockaded by the Nazi army.

Over the course of subsequent seasons, the bulb is replaced by a new one and daughter bulbs are formed. During this time, the small plant is fully formed, and by the 3rd season it produces a full-fledged flower. Under favorable conditions, a fruit is formed from the 3 carpels of the ovary - a small brown box. After ripening, it cracks and produces seed material.

However, most often tulips are cultivated from a ready-made mature bulb. After planting, it forms the root system, stolon and aerial part. The latter is formed from a small leaf, which gradually transforms into a stem and bud bud.

After a short flowering, the main root dies off, during which one or more rudimentary bulbs are formed. The next year, a young plant grows from them, and the cycle repeats again. After 3-4 years, up to several dozen small and large bulbs form in the soil, after which the plant begins to degenerate (the number and quality of flowers decreases sharply).

How did tulips, similar to peonies, originate?

More than five and a half thousand varieties of tulips are officially registered in the world. The terry variety is not the most common, about 9% of the world's assortment, but has been known for a long time.

The first hybridization, which turned part of the perianth into an additional circle of petals, occurred in nature; flower growers only selected the most interesting specimens resulting from random cross-pollination. Thus, by 1620, the first varietal group of Duke van Tol tulips had formed in Holland, represented by low, squat plants not exceeding 15–20 cm - it was from this group that, apparently, the early double species originated.

Late terry tulips appeared a little later - in the second half of the 17th century. There were few exotic varieties; they were valued, but with the development of artificial crossing, which appeared 100 years later, they “dissolved in time.”

One of the more recent supposed ancestors is the snow-white terry variety Murillo, which has remained in cultivation for more than 200 years.

Since the 19th century. The fullness of tulips develops as a result of hybridization and genetic mutation.

Proper care

After the bulbs have germinated, caring for the tulip plantings begins with a careful inspection and rejection of rotten specimens. Then you need to carefully loosen the bed, and the crop responds well to loosening. Caring for young plants comes down to regular watering, but not abundant, but moderate, but the top layer of soil in the bed with plants should never dry out.

Tulip sprouts

Providing regular and necessary fertilizing to growing tulips, daily attentive care, and regular watering will help grow healthy, bright flowers. And the most important thing to remember: after 4 years, the beds for tulips should be laid out in another place.

Use in landscape design

The black variety of tulips is usually planted in groups of nine plants. If the goal is urban gardening, 50 pieces of flowers can be used. The variety looks great:

  • in rockeries;
  • in the flower beds;
  • near the paths;
  • in containers;
  • near trees and bushes.

If you take more than one variety, you can achieve continuous flowering for two and a half months. One plant can bloom for about 15 days.

The black variety is actively used to create bouquets. Moreover, when cut, it costs at least ten days. To make the tulip look great in photos and in life, it is better to cut it early in the morning or late in the evening - at this time the plant is saturated with water.

Description of the flower and the history of its breeding

The black tulip was first mentioned in the 17th century during the heyday of the “tulip mania” (1636-1637), the center of which is considered to be Holland. There is a version according to which dark varieties spread from the Dutch city of Haarlem, where they were actually bred. However, the color of this tulip was not completely black; it was dominated by a dark purple hue. It is also mentioned in eastern tales and legends.

In 1979, official breeding research on the dark tulip began. The varieties Queen of the Night and Wiener Weld were chosen for crossing. The variety obtained in laboratory conditions visually appears resinous black, but in reality its petals shimmer with dark shades of purple .

In 1986, samples of black tulip obtained through selection were grown in the laboratory of the National Institute of Floristry in Denmark. In February of the same year, the variety was officially presented by the director of this institute.

The Black Prince variety belongs to the class of simple late plants . The dense and flexible stem is about 60 cm high. The rich green leaves closer to the edges form light wavy curves. The straight single peduncle is 36 cm long. The oval, oblong flower is painted in a dark purple color. The perianth has entire lobes. The bottom of the flower is of an indefinite, vague shape.

Peculiarities

The height of the flower varies from 11 to 101 centimeters. Roots may grow from the bottom of the bulb, but they are not the root system. The roots die off every year. Young bulbs may develop full stolons - these are shoots that are located on the sides and grow either vertically downwards or in different directions. Daughter bulbs may appear at the bottom of the shoot. The stem is erect and has a cylindrical shape.

The leaves are lanceolate-elongated, arranged in alternate order. They have a waxy coating on them, which is why the color of the foliage appears greenish-gray. At the top there is a small leaf plate, its name is flag leaf. There is a large leaf on the bottom of the tulip.

The black tulip has one flower. But there are varieties that can grow 3 or 5 flowers. The perianth has 6 leaves, there are also 6 stamens, which have long anthers.

These tulips come in dark purple, black-burgundy, black-red, black-blue or almost black colors.

Flowers vary in shape: goblet-shaped, oval, star-shaped, cup-shaped, peony-shaped, fringed and others. The size of the flowers depends on the variety. There are flowers that are 13 centimeters long, their diameter can be from 4 to 11 cm, and when fully opened, the diameter can reach 21 cm.

The buds open in sunlight; in the evening they may close. When the weather is cloudy, the flowers do not open at all.

As soon as the black tulip fades, the fruit will form.

The fruit is a box with three sides. Inside the fruit there are brown-yellow flat seeds that have a triangular shape.
