Why plastic bottles?

In recent years, much attention has been paid to the problem of garbage, in particular the large amount of plastic packaging that is thrown away as unnecessary and litters the planet.

Why not put them to work? Moreover, plastic bottles have a lot of advantages:

You don’t need to pay crazy amounts of money for them, you can simply collect them on the street, call out to friends, acquaintances and friends of friends;
From plastic bottles you can make not only low borders, but also full-fledged fences, as well as garden sculptures, and use them as containers for seedlings;
If you cut off the bottom of the bottles and bury them with their necks down, you can sow seeds of ornamental grass in them, you will get an original living border;
Unlike natural materials, plastic bottles do not absorb moisture, so they are ideal as borders for flower beds;
You can do anything with plastic bottles: paint (preferably from the inside, trim or cut them, connect them with a stapler, wire or with bolts and nuts;

Preparing glass bottles

Glass bottles are not the most affordable material. As a rule, one person cannot accumulate a sufficient amount of glass containers. But if such an opportunity exists, you can use this beautiful material to fence flower beds.

The glass containers should be prepared first.

Glass products should be washed thoroughly and removed from dirt, label fragments, and glue residues. To do this, glass containers are soaked in a hot soapy solution. Any detergent can be used: laundry soap, washing powder, dishwashing detergent. Bottles are immersed in a container of soapy water for 30–40 minutes. During this time, the remaining paper and glue soften.
Then, using a metal scraper or knife, the products are cleaned of glue residues or heavy dirt, and rinsed in clean water to get rid of soap stains.
The bottles are left to dry in the sun. After drying, the container can be used for laying fencing.

For a glass flower bed you can use bottles of any type and color. But to make the fence look aesthetically pleasing, it is better to choose glass containers of the same size, but the color can be very different.

Turning bottles into decorative material

The hardest part about making borders from bottles is collecting enough of them. Sometimes this takes several months.

Then the collected material must be prepared for work.

Sort the collected plastic containers by shape and shade: transparent, brown, blue, green, yellow - the main colors of factory production.
If transparent bottles are painted with acrylic paint, they will need to be washed with soap.
Painting a bottle is easy. Just pour a little paint inside and shake the container.
An interesting way to color a transparent bottle is to pour colored sand or salt into it. You can color the sand yourself by mixing it with crushed colored chalk.

The whole bottle can be dug into the ground with the bottom or neck up. In the first case, the decorative element will be the figured bottom of the container, in the second - multi-colored lids. The flowerbed itself can be traditionally horizontal and vertical.

Cement can be used to securely fix flower garden borders. This way you can create a deep flower bed from glass bottles in the shape of a cylinder.

The work order is as follows:

Fill bottles of the same shape and size with sand.
Pour a layer of sand half the thickness of a bottle, moisten and compact it.
Draw a circle in the sand - the base of the future cylinder.
Place the first row of bottles along the outer edge of the circle with their necks inward or outward and secure with cement mortar (2 parts sand, 1 part cement, water to obtain a dough consistency).
Place the second row of bottles on top of the first in a checkerboard pattern. The number of bottles in all rows should be the same.
Each row of bottles is laid on a layer of cement. Finish work when the desired height is reached.
Outside, you can decorate the flowerbed with mosaics, shells, pebbles, planting them on cement.

Plastic peacock flowers

Such products can protect crops from running animals and wild birds. Peacocks are very easy to make at home; you can use absolutely any bottle. To make the craft bright, I use enamel paint. How to do:

One plastic bottle produces 1 flower.
The neck part is cut off – “up to the shoulders”.
Next, they begin to cut the bottle into strips, barely reaching the bottom.
Each feather is sharpened with cuts.
In the center you can make a “fur center” according to the principle of chrysanthemums.

To make the peacock bigger and more dangerous, you can fasten 2-3 parts of the finished products. For reference, you can use ready-made templates.

Vertical flower beds

A vertical flower bed means growing flowers on a wall or fence. Plastic bottles are perfect for this.

They are laid horizontally and the sidewall is cut off to form a “boat”.
Such boats are fixed on a vertical surface in any order.
Inside each one, it remains to pour soil and sow flower seeds or plant seedlings.
Climbing plants are best suited.

Pots for outdoor flowers

The bottles transform well under high temperatures. Therefore, you can make anything you want from an ordinary bottle. Moreover, after repair work, there are often “bugs” left from under the primer or concrete contact, and you cannot hand them over to any collection point.

You can store both seedlings and ordinary long-flowered flowers in such pots. All you need:

Free time.
Several empty bottles.
Additional material for decoration - it can even be simple covers that were left over from the palm tree.

If you don’t have a suitable idea on how to decorate a flowerbed, you can make it multi-level or pyramidal.

Fill all bottles with sand.
Draw a circle of the first tier on the ground and dig bottles, necks down, around the perimeter. Tighten them with wire so that the border does not fall apart.
Fill the inside of the circle with soil level with the height of the bottles. Inside, draw a circle narrower than the first centimeter by 20-30.
Repeat steps two and three.
There can be as many tiers as you like. Flowers are planted in those segments where the ground is not occupied by bottles.

After all the flowers bloom, the pyramidal flower bed will look very impressive.

Asters for the garden

Usually this craft is made from plastic forks. However, if you can’t find them, then you can safely experiment with bottles. How asters are made:

You definitely need to take a closer look at the natural flower.
Next, take one piece for 0.5, 1, 2 liters.
The neck of each bottle is carefully cut off at the shoulder. This is the part that will be used.
Each is cut into small strips, not reaching the edge.
After this, all parts are carefully fastened together. You can place a yellow cork in the middle.

Additionally, you can “break” each strip. Then the variegated flower will turn out curly and beautiful.

Fence made of plastic bottles

Of course, such a fence will not be suitable as a fence protecting the yard from prying eyes from the street. It's transparent and flimsy. But it’s quite suitable as yard partitions.

The bottom of each bottle is cut off and the cap is twisted. Now they can be strung on metal pins stuck into the ground at the same distance.
Between the pins you can place the same vertical structures, but without a metal base.
And in order to connect all the fence segments to each other, you can thread a rigid wire horizontally through the bottles.
It is advisable to run the wire along the bottom, top and middle.

Which bottles are suitable?

Bottles of absolutely any capacity and color are suitable for arranging a flower bed. It is better to take hard ones, but soft ones will also come in handy if you fill them with earth.

It is convenient to take bottles with the neck cut off, because it is easier to load the filler. Another plus is that you will have to dig a trench that is not so deep. True, a flowerbed made from cut bottles will not be as durable as one made from whole ones.

The plastic used is a wonderful material for outdoor work, as it will not warp under the scorching rays of the sun and will not burst in severe frost.

In addition, plastic containers dug into the ground will limit the spread of weed roots in a flower bed and even retain rainwater.

How to install a two-tier flower bed

Bury a row of plastic bottles in a circle, not very deep, upside down. Fill the space between them with earth to the very bottom.

Inside, mark out a place for another flowerbed of half the diameter and dig another row of bottles, also shallowly. Cover this circle with soil as well.

You have two flower beds at different levels, resembling a two-tier cake in shape. All that remains is to loosen the soil, water it and plant low flowers.

A two-tier flower bed does not have to be round. Depending on the landscape, you can make it oval, droplet-shaped, figure eight, etc.

Horizontal placement

When placed horizontally, the containers are located parallel to the ground (Fig. 3). There are 3 ways here:

First. A trench is also dug, the width of which is equal to the diameter of the bottles. Containers filled with water, earth or other material are placed in it.
Second. The neck is cut exactly to the point where the vessel begins to narrow. The bottles are inserted into each other, the gaps are filled with earth or other material.
The third one is the most difficult. Using this method, literally vertical, tall flower beds are made. Here you will need additional materials, such as cement and a rigid base to which the bottles will be attached, for example, a large rubber tire, an old barrel without a bottom, you can even use flexible slate if desired. The size of the flower bed will depend on their size.

Bottles need to be glued over the entire outer area of the base. To do this, a cement mortar is applied on top of it in a thick enough layer so that the neck can be pressed firmly into it.

The bottles are placed from bottom to top, each bottom row will support the one above. Therefore, the very first row, which is the foundation of the entire building, must be given close attention: it must be installed as level as possible.
