Glazed gazebos: options, types, methods, photos

Modern glazed gazebos for a summer cottage with a barbecue are the most comfortable place to relax in any weather, here we can admire the landscape, sky, horizon. This is exactly the type of gazebo that many companies offer to build for us, although if we wish, we will build it ourselves.

Glazing the roof, at least partially, is very impressive. We can equip glazed openings with mosquito nets, ensuring the most comfortable rest.

Glazing the gazebo will make it cozy and hospitable even in rain and frost, and will also provide us with sound insulation.

What type of glazing suits you: warm or cold?

First of all, you need to decide what you want to achieve in your gazebo? There are only two options in this case.

Warm - implies complete protection of the gazebo from external weather conditions , including winter, by installing triple-glazed windows.

This method will allow you to achieve a comfortable temperature even at sub-zero temperatures outside the window, provided that the floor, walls and roof are insulated. It is used if you also want to use the gazebo in winter.

If you need warm glazing (plastic or warm aluminum), we recommend the Moscow company PVC Window Plant. The price ranges from approximately 3,600 - 7,000 rubles per m2.

Cold - in this case, you can protect the gazebo only from rain, wind and dust.

It will not be possible to significantly increase the temperature inside, although it can be used for the spring and autumn seasons. A cold look is aesthetically pleasing and effective, but unreliable when compared to a warm one.

  • Warm is a thorough and reliable method of glazing.
  • Cold - beautiful and stylish, but short-lived.

Advantages and disadvantages

A screened porch is a design that is hard to miss. Private houses and cottages, the entrance area of which is decorated in this way, look especially modern and stylish. Many homeowners choose such solutions to revive the facade of their home and give it a fresher look. Glazed porches also have other important advantages.

  • Such structures are very easy to maintain. Most of the dirt that ends up on glass bases can be easily and quickly removed with a regular damp cloth or using common window cleaning products. Treatment with antiseptics and other protective compounds is not required here.
  • The main thing that captivates homeowners in glazed entrance areas is their aesthetic appearance. As mentioned above, such structures look very beautiful and original, so they can refresh even the simplest residential buildings.
  • A glass porch can cost owners a relatively small price. This plus is important for those users who are not willing to pay too much for such structures.
  • The buildings under consideration are characterized by very low thermal conductivity. If you want to make the porch heated, then plastic glazing will be a win-win solution.
  • A high-quality glazed porch will last a very long time without losing its attractive appearance. Over the years, glass structures, unless they have wooden guides, will not rot or collapse.

A glass porch has not only advantages, but also certain disadvantages. Let's get to know them.

If the porch is decorated with glass that is part of plastic windows, then there will be a noticeable limitation in size. For example, it will be very difficult to glaze a panoramic porch-veranda.

Porch glazing structures can be very heavy. This is especially true for PVC parts.

No matter how high-quality and strong the glass is, it can still be accidentally broken

Of course, in the case of multi-layered and high-quality elements, this is extremely difficult to do, but situations vary, and people will still have to exercise at least minimal caution.

Reliable warm glazing with triple glazing (Eurowindow)

An option for those who value reliability, durability and simplicity. Installing triple-glazed windows will maximize the protection of the gazebo from external conditions. The most popular option is to install casement windows that can be opened for ventilation and closed for protection.

The profile can be used from PVC (white plastic, as in new buildings) or wood. The second option is more aesthetically pleasing and cleaner, from an environmental point of view, but more expensive and less durable. Most often, it is advisable to install a standard double-glazed window with PVC and forget about it for many years. The photo below shows options with both PVC and wood.

Service

Like any element of a building, facade glazing, despite its reliability and durability, requires maintenance and sometimes repair. During operation, the rubber seals lose their elasticity, the sealing of the openings is compromised, the metal frame is slightly deformed, and adjustment of the fittings of the opening elements may also be required.

When installing cold systems, building owners often have a desire to change the glazing to warm ones or install double-glazed windows with a high level of noise absorption. All repairs or maintenance of glass facades must be carried out by specialists, this will ensure their durable and safe operation.

Traditional glazing with wooden windows

Of course, the windows themselves are made of glass, but the frames are wooden. Similar windows can be seen in old houses; in the USSR they were everywhere.

It is enough to install the window, install the glass and secure it with wooden glazing beads. It’s difficult to find a cheaper and easier option. If you drive around the villages, you can cheaply buy wooden frames from someone, from which you can glaze the gazebo.

The option is quite working. And if you don’t want to spend money and a lot of time, it’s ideal.

All gazebos with wooden windows look almost the same. If you choose the right color, you can achieve good aesthetics of your room both outside and inside.

Advantages and disadvantages

Glazing verandas and terraces with sliding frames has undoubted advantages:

  • aluminum frames cost twice, and sometimes even three times less than their plastic or wooden counterparts;
  • in the open position, such structures do not take up space inside the veranda;
  • installation of aluminum systems takes less time than installation of PVC analogues;
  • the material from which the profile is made ensures the rigidity and strength of the system;
  • elements of the aluminum structure (frame, sashes) are lightweight, so they do not overload the foundation;
  • frames made of this material are not subject to fire;
  • the profile is equipped with locking mechanisms, which protects the windows from burglary;
  • To keep structures clean, it is enough to remove dirt from glass and guide profiles.

Sliding glazing of the veranda and terrace allows you to install large windows of various shapes.

Along with numerous advantages, sliding systems also have some disadvantages:

  • sliding doors on skids are a less practical option than swinging counterparts;
  • aluminum structures do not require room insulation because they have a low heat saving rate;
  • frames made of this material also have a rather low level of noise insulation (however, this drawback is insignificant, since it is always quieter in the country than in the city);
  • in the off-season, frames and glass are covered with condensation, and in frosty weather - with frost.

Glazing of gazebos with aluminum profiles

The cost of aluminum glazing is from 2,700 - 6,000 thousand per m2. We took the prices from the Moskovskaya website, from the page: verandas / terraces / gazebos. This manufacturer produces and installs all types of glazing (except polycarbonate): aluminum, plastic, frameless, sliding, wooden windows. Focusing only on the price per m2 is quite difficult, so to find out the cost of your project, it’s easier to call or leave a request.

This glazing method involves installing one double-glazed window into an aluminum profile, which makes it possible to achieve panoramic windows. Gazebos with similar glazing look very beautiful, and the frames can be painted in the color you want.

There is an option with sliding windows - it is very practical and aesthetically pleasing, although the installation process is more expensive and complex. If the gazebo will not be used in winter, but you need reliable glazing, aluminum will come in handy. It is not as expensive as a Euro window.

Aluminum glazing will cost you about half as much as installing plastic European windows with triple glazing.

It is important to understand that aluminum glazing is cold, so such covering will not make the room much warmer.

If you want to create a comfortable temperature inside the gazebo, you can install a potbelly stove, and you will need to additionally make a chimney - if the gazebo is high, then the chimney will cost more than the stove itself.

DIY design

Original options from the simplest glass bottles - the cheapest type of material. These bottles can be assembled in a very short period of time. Soft PVC windows for gazebos have become popular.

Glass pavilions with stained glass inserts and interesting ceramic inserts look great - there are plenty of options for each owner to express his artistic taste and show his extraordinary talent.

You can find many ready-made designs for glazed gazebos made of brick and wood and choose the one you like best so that it turns out inexpensive, beautiful, durable and cozy.

The advantages of glass buildings are obvious: a wonderful view of the garden opens up, a glass gazebo looks like a transparent structure and does not seem like a heavy building, even if its dimensions are quite impressive. In such a building you can put all the kitchen utensils so that relaxing in the gazebo becomes a nice get-together.

With grill or barbecue

An antique samovar on coals or a barbecue wouldn’t hurt either - here it’s no longer a luxury, but a necessity. Can you imagine drinking tea from an electric kettle in the garden? Only smoky-smelling tea in such wonderful glass buildings would be appropriate. You can find out what a gazebo with a brick barbecue will look like from this article.

The thickness of the glass for such large buildings can be 8-10 mm - practically unbreakable, very reliable and durable, and holds both cold and heat well.

If you still decide on a traditional gazebo with large panoramic windows, then try to make the edging small, so the entire gazebo will seem light, even with a heavy roof.

Foundation for the summer version

To install a glass building, a columnar foundation is sufficient. This is not a permanent structure, unlike a more reliable structure made of laminated veneer lumber for making a strip foundation. However, given the fact that glass is a heavy material, if there are no strong supporting structures, it is still worth pouring a narrow strip foundation.

Glazing

For cold glazing you just need an aluminum profile that will hold the glass. When fastening triplex, use point fasteners; you can use stainless steel pipes as the frame to which the glass is attached - you choose the material to your liking. For simple moving out, as in a residential building, you use ordinary frames - the most permanent type of insulation for a summer gazebo. Read about metal, forged gazebos for summer cottages here.

The process of erecting a glazed gazebo on a columnar foundation is presented in the following video:

Roof

The roof of such a gazebo should be light; a metal profile is best suited - it looks great, is quick to install, easy to maintain and durable. It can be used to make an excellent pitched roof. And a few words about doors: since you are creating a closed space, you should definitely install the same glass doors - the whole structure will seem like a single whole, look beautiful and will retain heat perfectly.

Frameless glazing of gazebos (frameless, Finnish)

Speaking about the frameless glazing method, we mean the use of glass fixed in the sashes at the top and bottom.

Depending on the design, the doors can open, close, be fixed, move and even fold (the photo below shows a folding design). These glasses are regulated using a control located just below the glass inside the gazebo.

If you are planning to install similar protection in your dacha, then I recommend that you read about frameless glazing and study the prices. This is a really modern and interesting material that will decorate your gazebo or veranda. When I studied this issue, I found out that it is quite inexpensive, but looks 5+.

This option looks very attractive, but has a number of obvious disadvantages.

  • Low sealing. Sooner or later, snow, rain and even dust will begin to fall indoors. The use of such glass wears out the entire structure.
  • No mosquito nets. In the summer, it will be difficult to protect yourself from mosquitoes, except with plates or electric repellers.
  • Low sound insulation. Everything is heard, everything is seen - not for everyone.

Soft glass (PVC film)

Link to a more complete article on this topic - Soft PVC windows for gazebos (PVC curtains, soft glass, film windows). The film can be used to cover not only temporary holes or openings in the gazebo, but also to fully glaze the windows. There are several options for introducing PVC film.

  1. Fastening through eyelets or fasteners. In this case, you buy a special film designed to fit the size of your window openings, with fastenings around the perimeter. This is a more expensive and “flexible” option that can be removed as needed.
  2. Fastening with staples and wooden blocks. It’s very similar to preserving a structure for the winter, only everything is done much more aesthetically. The film is stretched along the perimeter of the opening and is first fixed with staples, and then nailed or screwed onto self-tapping screws through wooden blocks.

This method is perfectly implemented in the gazebo presented in the video below. The man was not too lazy to install a potbelly stove, so in winter you can feel comfortable inside.

Tips for choosing

When ordering the type of glazing, it is necessary to take into account that such structures must reliably protect the internal space of the gazebo from negative atmospheric influences, be mobile, provide easy opening/closing, be quite strong and durable, and at the same time have an aesthetic appearance.

The gazebo is a temporary lightweight structure, and the windows, even in the cold version, have significant weight, so when choosing the type of glazing, the developer must take into account several important factors :

  1. Pergola base – uPVC and timber windows will require a strong base. The type that can be used is a wooden beam laid on the foundation, which should protrude beyond the boundaries of the gazebo by at least 0.5 m around the perimeter.

  2. It is better to make the foundation columnar, raising it above the ground by 30 - 40 cm.
  3. You also need to pay attention to the quality of the floor; it is allowed to install horizontal logs from timber, and on them boards and plywood, preferably waterproof.
  4. PVC and aluminum windows cannot support the heavy weight of the roof, so any tiles cannot be used for it; it is better to choose a soft roof.

Most often, the walls of the gazebo are made of wood or framed, covered with natural or artificial lining, so the installation of wooden, aluminum and PVC windows should be carried out with the installation of a casing/frame, which should ensure the independence of the frame from the behavior of the wall structures.

An example of choosing windows for a 4x5 m gazebo with installation:

  • wall material - frame covered with clapboard inside and outside;
  • glazing - on 3 sides;
  • near the fourth side there is a grill with an oven;
  • facade - double-leaf PVC door 1500 x 2100 mm and 2 blind PVC windows 1200 x 1000 mm;
  • on the side walls there are two opening PVC frame windows and 2 fixed windows;
  • Rehau profile, single-chamber cold.

Calculation of the cost of glazing a gazebo:

  • door 1500 x 2100 mm: RUB 24,560;
  • window facade 1200 x 1000 mm, fixed: 3190x1.2x1x2=7656 rub.;
  • side walls, frame windows 1000 x 1000 mm: 7150x1x1x2 = 14,300 rub.;
  • side walls blind windows 1000 x 1000 mm: 3190x1x1x4=12760 rub.;
  • door installation: RUB 4,700;
  • installation of windows: 3200Х8=25600 rub.;
  • in total, the cost of PVC structures is 59,276 rubles;
  • installation cost - 30,300 rubles;
  • total cost - 89,576 rubles.

Polycarbonate glazing

In modern construction, polycarbonate has become a very popular material that is used everywhere. Polycarbonate can not only cover the gazebo from the sun's rays or make a roof, but also fully glaze the window openings.

Transparent material is used to allow the sun's rays to enter, and matte material is used to block one or another view.

Whether cellular or monolithic polycarbonate is used for glazing is a question for discussion in another publication. In this case, it is important to understand that such a method is possible. The photo above shows the cellular version.

Stained glass glazing

With painted patterns, with drawings, from several pieces - all these are options for making stained glass. If the design is chosen well, it will look very beautiful indoors.

Often gazebos look inadequate and rough - a few pillars, a roof and a table. Stained glass windows make the gazebo more attractive and warm.

There can really be a lot of options. In the selection of photographs below, solutions for different types of gazebos were selected. All of these photos are potential ideas for glazing your space.

Design features

Glass gazebos can have regular geometric shapes, but they cannot be classified as typical. There are several design options; buildings can be:

  • round;
  • square;
  • rectangular;
  • hexagonal;
  • octagonal.

Note. Whatever type of gazebo is chosen, it must fit into the landscape.

Glazed gazebos with barbecues are a great place where you can spend time and not feel the presence of annoying insects.

Advice. Since the flow of fresh air into a glazed gazebo will be limited, glazing should be done with double-glazed windows that can be opened for ventilation.
