How to grow Korean chrysanthemums - the last flowers in the garden

Autumn wind chimes began to play, and little chrysanthemums began to dance at the ball - like real princesses. White, yellow, lilac, crimson, red, two-colored - their bright (especially in sunny weather) outfit fascinates visitors to the Garden.
The first to “perform” in the waltz are border small-flowered chrysanthemums with a height of 15 to 35 cm with inflorescences from 2 to 9 cm. Then comes the turn of early-blooming cut princess chrysanthemums, and only then (and often in parallel with them) comes the time for the “coming out” of the ball queens - large-flowered chrysanthemums, which we will meet a little later. In the meantime, all attention is given to the “young talents” - small flowers.

Simple and terry, hemispherical and spherical, flat, ray-shaped, bent, anemoid, spider-shaped, pompom-shaped - they are so different that you want to look at the outfit of each of them, to catch the sweet-tart (sometimes with honey notes) aroma. Bushes of various heights:

  • dwarf or border - up to 35 cm;
  • low - 36-54 cm;
  • medium height - 55-80 cm;
  • tall - 85 cm or more.

Every year, when chrysanthemums bloom in Nikita, some kind of sadness fills the heart and soul: summer is over, and autumn has passed into the second half. And the chrysanthemums are blooming - more and more beauties are involved in the dance every day: some of them are already familiar to us, others are new. In total, 240 varieties are presented this year, half of which are small-flowered chrysanthemums.

The shooting was carried out on October 28 of this year with the same Pentax SLR camera. The sun hid behind the clouds, then again flooded the blooming chrysanthemums with unseasonably bright rays. I considered it necessary to supplement the varieties that have just begun to bloom with a photograph of the period of mass flowering last year (in the collage these photos are located on the right), so sometimes the chrysanthemum will appear before you as a changeable beauty, and this will be all its charm.

So, we meet the participants of the Chrysanthemum Ball 2016 in the Nikitsky Botanical Garden - small-flowered varieties.

Small-flowered chrysanthemums with simple inflorescences

These are the majority of princesses of the autumn ball, but their charm lies in the apparent simplicity of the inflorescences. You can always clearly see not only the marginal reeds, but also the center of the inflorescence with tubular flowers. Flowering is very abundant and long lasting.

An unusual domestic variety created in Crimea by Z.P. Andryushenkova and A.V. Misyura. He fascinated me last year. The inflorescence is simple, up to 6 cm in diameter, crimson-white, variegated, the reed flowers remain directed upward: it seems that it glows from within with some mysterious moonlight. The bushes are medium-sized, 40-45 cm high, durable. The leaves are dark green, leathery. Good for autumn flower beds and cuttings. Surprisingly, we might not have met the 'Stranger': Zoya Pavlovna initially rejected this hybrid form, but thanks to a colleague it was abandoned, and now we see that it was not in vain.

Possible diseases and pests

Chrysanthemums can be susceptible to various diseases due to excessive soil moisture or because it is not loose enough. Among the most common diseases are the following:

  1. Gray rot. Appears on the leaves in the form of dark spots with a gray coating.
  2. Powdery mildew. Affects all parts of chrysanthemums. You can distinguish it by its white coating.
  3. Rust. Affects the above-ground part of the plant. Brown spots form on the affected leaves. Over time, the leaves begin to thin and fall off. As a result, the plant stops growing.

To treat fungal diseases, drugs containing copper (colloidal sulfur, Bordeaux mixture or copper oxychloride) are used.

Often such flowers can be affected by viral diseases such as:

  • dwarfism - early flowering out of season and underdeveloped stems;
  • mosaic - the formation of a speckled color on the leaves;
  • aspermia - change in leaf color and deformation of flowers.

These diseases cannot be cured, so the only correct option is to completely uproot and destroy the flowers.

Chrysanthemums often suffer from nematodes . The presence of such pests is indicated by marbled leaves, which over time begin to darken and fall off. To prevent the appearance of nematodes, phosphamide and formalin should be used.

Flower bushes may be attacked by aphids. It can settle both in buds and on foliage. The negative impact of such a pest is that it sucks the juice from the plant, and this leads to the partial death of the flower. For treatment, it is recommended to spray with Actellik.

With an increase in doubleness (due to the marginal reed flowers), the inflorescences undoubtedly become more beautiful. It's like princesses adding layers to their luxurious skirts.

Growing from seeds

Chrysanthemum Emperor of China

The “Japanese miracle” can be propagated by two methods: vegetatively and by seeds. Flowers planted with seeds tolerate low temperatures better, but may partially lose their varietal qualities.

You can plant seeds directly into the ground, or use the seedling method.

The easiest way is to plant seeds in the ground. You will see the fruits of your labor late: only at the end of summer. And you need to act as follows:

  1. We dig small holes every 25cm, water with warm water,
  2. Place 3 seeds in each hole and sprinkle soil on top.
  3. If it’s cool, cover the top with agrofibre. At the first shoots we remove the shelter.
  4. Traditional care: thinning, weeding, loosening.
  5. Leave one strong plant in each hole. The rest can be removed or replanted.
  6. During the growth process, we feed with complex fertilizer.

Growing through seedlings should begin no later than February, since Korean chrysanthemum will bloom only after 6 months. Therefore in February

  1. Fill a container 6-8 cm high with soil.
  2. We distribute the seeds over the surface and cover them with river sand in a 1 cm layer.
  3. We carefully moisten it so that the seeds do not “go” deep into the soil and cover with glass. We remove the glass from time to time for ventilation.
  4. Shoots should appear in 2 weeks at a temperature of +18.
  5. We water and feed regularly. To prevent the seedlings from stretching, we highlight them.
  6. We dive into peat pots (you can use any containers) if there are three true leaves.
  7. We plant in the place chosen for flowering in May (+15 degrees), maintaining a gap of -20 cm between plants, and 30 cm between rows.

You need to know this: Korean chrysanthemum is the only one among its “relatives” that can tolerate low temperatures. In the southern territories it winters without shelter; in the middle zone and northern regions it needs to be sheltered in winter. Flowering begins in early August and ends at the end of October. That is why it is called “autumn flower”.

Botanical description of the plant

All varieties of chrysanthemums can be classified as artificially bred hybrids . Korean chrysanthemum has the following botanical characteristics:

  • stem height, depending on the variety, can vary from 40 cm to 1 meter;
  • the color of the leaves can be different (ranging from light green to a marsh shade);
  • all varieties can be divided into tall, medium-growing and border varieties;
  • buds have a wide color palette.

Growing such a flower does not require any specific conditions, so the Korean chrysanthemum tolerates winter normally in almost all regions of central Russia. When growing in Siberia or the Urals, additional shelter will be needed.

Gardeners grow chrysanthemums on their property not only to decorate the landscape of the area, but also for cutting into bouquets. Chrysanthemum variety 'Gipsofila'

A charming variety. The inflorescence is white, up to 2 cm in diameter, pompom-shaped. The name of the variety is very accurately given - “gypsophila”, since it is almost an exact copy of the real graceful Terry gypsophila (Gypsophila elegans 'Plena'). In terms of the size of the inflorescences, this is one of the smallest princesses.

Chrysanthemum variety 'Ping Pong White'

And again representatives of the variety series or “family”: this time Ping Pong with pompom-shaped inflorescences. A variety with white inflorescences that turn pink when flowering. Chrysanthemum variety 'Ping Pong Yellow'

A relative of the variety 'Ping Pong White', but with yellow inflorescences.
Both varieties attract the attention of children, who strive to touch the dense inflorescences, reminiscent of a table tennis ball. The release of the youngest princesses - small-flowered varieties - has ended. But the Chrysanthemum Ball 2016 continues...

*The basket inflorescence of chrysanthemums looks like one flower, but in fact it consists of a large number of reed flowers colored in different colors, and the center is made of yellow tubular flowers.

Care instructions

Caring for the Korean chrysanthemum has its own characteristics, which you should know about so that the decorative properties of the flower are fully revealed. The following recommendations should be followed:
